Chalkboards and wreaths and crackle paint, oh my!

Okay, so don't judge me---but I'm blogging on a Friday night.
Or do...just don't tell me :-)
I can justify it though...I couldn't help staying in on a Friday while #thehub is away for the weekend for a bachelor party. It is SO. NICE. having the house to myself! I'm sure you all would agree.

Wine in hand, and Os on the TV, I'm ready to share my latest creations with you all.
That's right. Two. A double whammy. Woop Woop! Here we go.

When we first moved in our house, #thehub found the glass cabinet covers for the corner cabinets in our dining room. They were rounded, and kind of cool, but when I didn't want them back on the cabinets, they ended up just kind of hanging out in our garage.

Now, I had always secretly envied those big chalkboards painted on kitchen walls, so when we moved in, it was one of the first things i did---there it is again, proof I'm crazy. Unfortunately for me, when we repainted the kitchen a few months ago, we (ahem, HE) decided to paint over my greatest creation (So devastating for me!!!) Since then, I've been missing my chalkboard like whoa. Black Rob was even like "----whoa."

So what I decided to do was turn the class cabinet doors into my new kitchen chalkboard.
And really-----what this post is all about is Martha Stewart crackle paint. That stuff is the #BEESKNEES
Here's the before and after first. Then the det's...

A little chalkboard paint (sorry guys, forgot to take the original before! I get too excited.)
Now this stuff is what you need to get. It goes on sort of like icing a cake. The thicker you put it on, the bigger the cracking. <insert witty pun here>

After it was completely covered in crackle
What the crackle paint looks like prior to drying/cracking
The GORGEOUS after effect.
How cool/authentic does that look?

My next step was to make the paint look even more aged by wiping it with some stain I had laying around. I used one of those black craft sponges to "paint" it on, then let it dry for a minute or two, then wiped the excess off.
Before wiping off
More "painting"
After wiping the excess
More after

Finally, I needed to figure out a way to hang the chalkboard. I purchased some wire and picture hangers from home depot and strung it across the back. This wire is awesome by the way. The package even has a self cutter on it!

stringing across the back. yes. that's me. glad you can't see my face because that was the "rainy crafty sunday" so obviously I am "at my best."

Just a little tutorial to follow on how to tie the wire...

Twist once around

Then twist up the wire running across the back

Once you've twisted up a few times, twist back down, and fold then excess back up against the wire. You can test it out by pulling it, but the hold is really strong.

Now I can list my life away!!! #thehub is so happy...
Lastly...
I wanted to quickly share my mother's day gifts I made this year...
My girlfriend and I had a craft night, and made wreaths! I made one for my mom and mother in law, and katie---well---she made one for herself, then decided she should at least make one for her mom. #StingyB*!

Momma Petri and Me! I got my craftiness from her most definitely.
Hope everyone had a great mother's day...and keep this in mind for a gift next year!!
<3 They all loved them <3

towel wine rack

Created with PhotoShake

Rainy Sunday=Crafty Sunday

I had my 10 year high school reunion last Saturday. It was pretty much as expected: I think I repeated the phrase "so what have you been up to?" 50 or so times, even though we've all pretty much Facebook stalked each other anyway.

So two of my out of town best friends and their husbands stayed the night after, and we woke up Sunday morning to more of the same weather we had on Saturday----overcast, muggy, and drizzle-ly. Yuck.

After the crew left, I decided to take advantage of the early start (I knew we were old when we all woke up at 7:30 am regardless of the previous day's drinking festivities).

I'd been contemplating a project with a wine rack my hubby acquired from Craigslist over a year ago, but only decided about a week or two ago what to do with it. He's a craigslist phenom when it comes to finding good deals and interesting pieces, but this one was his 1/10. It was dark plain oak and just ugly.

We only have one full bathroom in our 1940's home, so space and storage are at a premium. The wine rack seemed to fit perfectly on the wall next to our tub and with a little help from Pinterest, the idea to create a towel rack was born.

The original lattice in the rack was too small to fit a rolled towel, so I had to cut a few of them out to make them bigger. I taped off the lattice so I wouldn't get confused on where to cut and not to cut, but I think I got a little saw-happy because I still messed up once----
You can sort of see where I cut through the wrong piece on the right side---that's why they make glue!

I used a reciprocating saw to cut the wood, but a hand saw would have worked just fine. I have a new addiction to power tools :-) I know, I'm crazy.

I used a power sander to sand everything down. If you like refinishing furniture it is a GREAT investment. We had to cut down a door in the kitchen after installing our new floor and were able to use the power sander instead. Like I said, great investment and easy to use too!

I primed using a combo of hand painting and spray painting. It was hard to get the back behind the second set of lattice. So the spray paint came in handy for that.

I decided to go with teal as an accent color on the front. Our bathroom is black, white, and light yellow (its very 1940s/50s) so I thought it would go well with the theme. Another motivating factor was that this paint was left over from our dining room...what can I say, I'm a #ThriftyB

I used the power sander and some hand sanding to rub off some of the paint and get an worn look. I just changed the sandpaper on the power sander to about a 220 so it was finer, and it worked pretty well.

The final Product!

Looks much better than the before if I do say so myself.
As a reminder, this was my FIRST piece of furniture I finished. So if I can do it, anyone can. It just takes a little bit of time and patience. (I'm really impatient so I had to fill my time with other projects while I waited for coats to dry...so more projects to come!)

On other note, I'm setting a new goal for myself to post every week, either on Fridays or Sundays. Mark your calendars #CraftyB's!

#buzz

So this is my first "go" at a blog, and I'm armed with my wine glass in hand (there will be a lot of that I'm sure. I think I'll have to come up with a hash tag or something clever).

I've always thought about blogging---well---I've always thought about a lot of things, but it was my discovery and admiration of a blog created by a good friend's sister that pushed me over the edge this weekend. (Naptimedecorator.blogspot.com - shout out to the Grochmals!)

Speaking of shout outs, I can't take credit for this name either. My newest best friend (she'll love me for saying that BTW) came up with it when she was simultaneously filled with Joy & Jealousy at my latest home creation...though her definition of "Bee" was a bit more derogatory.

So this is the result. A potentially witty, partially bragging, preferredly helpful account of my escapades with Pinterest, home decorating, renovation, and newly married life. I'd say expect lots of before and afters, gift ideas, and cheap DIY projects...maybe some wine recommendations too (Hey,  home ownership is hard!!!! And I don't even have kids yet....Good Lord.)

So my glass is almost gone, and the hub went to bed, so I guess this post is past retirement too. I have to say I'm excited for the first "real" post. I'm debating over mason jar solar lights, scrapbook paper light switch covers, or fun withthe reciprocating saw. I'd like to ask for votes, but I'm not really sure who I'm asking yet...haha?
 #buzz?
(First attempt at the clever thing, we'll see how that pans out)

BTW, thanks for bearing with the intro
